MEET JOHN CAMPBELL

Friend of the People, A Champion for Working Families.

John, a lifelong resident of Des Moines, has dedicated his life to serving others. After serving in the Marine Corps reserves and the Army, he chose Iowa as his forever home, joined the civilian workforce, and became a prominent labor leader, recognized voting rights activist, and a staunch advocate for everyday working people. Now, he's ready to bring his commitment to the people of Iowa as a candidate for the Iowa House District 34.

John was raised by a working class mother who was a teacher for a few years before dying of cancer at the age forty three. He knows firsthand the struggles of working-class families, having faced tough decisions himself as a father of a daughter with disability. He spent 10 years with the Teamsters and worked as a Political Director for Steelworkers in Iowa. He has been a member of AFSCME and has collaborated with AFSCME and various trade unions in the state of Iowa. He is built for the people’s work.

Iowa is heading in the wrong direction with policies that hurt everyday working people and our children’s futures. Despite a 67.2% labor force participation rate, in 2024, worker protections continue to shrink, and equity in wages and housing opportunities is shameful. He's running for office to give Iowans and the people of Des Moines a choice and a voice in their future, advocating for equitable healthcare, accessibility to mental health services, high-quality education, reproductive freedoms, and fair wages that will support working families and the Iowa economy.

Forward, Together.

John brings a wealth of experience and a deep-rooted commitment to the issues that matter most to Iowans. With a focus on economic justice, housing, job opportunities, and the importance of union jobs and apprenticeships, John looks forward to working with hard-working Iowans to strengthen the foundation of our communities. He understands the significance of home ownership and believes in the proper use of tax structures to support entrepreneurs and small businesses, fostering economic growth in HD 34 and across the state.

With his experience as a lobbyist and activist, John has a proven track record of fighting for progressive policies, including fundamental rights such as women's reproductive rights and mental health parity. Having raised a daughter with a disability, he is very familiar with challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and is committed to fighting for disability rights in the people’s house.

Despite his accomplishments, John is a humble leader who prefers to let his actions speak for themselves. He is committed, persistent, and willing to take the road less traveled to achieve meaningful change that will impact real people in real-time. As a great listener, John values hearing all points of view and believes in working collaboratively to find solutions to our most pressing issues.

John is committed to working hard to EARN every vote in House District 34 so Iowans are confident that they have a dedicated advocate who will always prioritize the needs of working families and fight for a better future for all. There is no better time to fight hard for a better now & future for Iowa. But he can only do this if YOU the people join in, in the fight.
